Designing a Kid-Friendly Bathroom With Sophisticated Style

A kid-friendly bathroom can be the perfect place for your children to play and relax. But we're here to tell you that it doesn't have to look like a typical kid's bathroom! The truth is you can create a sophisticated, stylish space that your kids will love while still keeping it comfortable and safe.

But Jordan, how?

We're glad you asked because the kids' bathroom isn't always easy. Growing families have different needs. For example, the kids need a tub/shower combo. Very rarely do we see households where the kids don't get a tub for bathing, which might be a contrast to how we design a primary bathroom. Similarly, the bathroom designated for the kids needs to come with plenty of storage that can accommodate their every need as they grow.

So, here are some of our best tips for designing a sophisticated kids' bathroom that will give your family room to grow while still being stylish.

Tip 1: Choose Durable Materials That Will Stand Up To Wear & Tear

When it comes to picking out materials for your kids' bathroom, you want something that is durable but still looks good. For this very reason, we encourage parents to choose materials that are easy to clean, like tile or stone floors, and opt for washable or stain-resistant paints. This way, if there are any spills or accidents in the bathroom, they will be easier to clean up with minimal damage. Because, honestly, how many times have we learned the hard way that kids are messy and ‘Washable’ doesn’t always mean it won’t stain?

Additionally, consider opting for brass or stainless steel fixtures, as they tend to last longer than plastic ones. It’s hard telling what happens in the kids’ bathroom sometimes, so it’s best to plan for the unknown, and durable fixtures help you do just that!

Tip 2: Think About Storage Solutions

Kids often need extra storage space due to all their toys and other items they bring into the bathroom. If you have infants or toddlers, bath time is a ritual and full-on experience. So, you need space for all those enrichment toys and accessories. As your children get older, they’ll swap rubber duckies for hair straighteners and grooming tools. So, storage solutions need to be flexible and long-lasting.

To accomplish this, we walk parents through various considerations, including shelving or a countertop cabinet unit to provide additional storage so that everything has its place and is easily accessible when needed. This will also help keep the floor clear of clutter, making the room look more organized and sophisticated.

It’s a WIN-WIN!

Tip 3: Consider Adding Bright Colors For An Interesting Look

Oftentimes, a kid or spare bathroom lacks any sort of natural lighting element, like a window or skylight. So, we’re left to create our own sunshine through bright colors. However, brightening up the space doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go with a funky wall color. It can be as simple as using white on the walls and metallic-color tiles in the shower area (like we’ve done with the bathroom below).

Adding bright colors helps bring life into the room without making it too cluttered or overwhelming. Try using silvers, golds, and lighter shades of green on accent walls or even on fixtures like mirrors and faucets for an eye-catching effect. By adding these pops of color throughout the room, you can create an interesting yet sophisticated look that both you and your kids will love!
