How to Create a Room That Makes Your Brain Happy

Creating a positive home environment doesn't just make every room in your home welcoming; It's also good for your mental well-being! Think about it: Does a cluttered living room make you anxious? Does the mess in the office make it hard to concentrate? Does the crowded kitchen make meal times a mental chore? If you answered YES to any of these questions, then it's time to think about how you can create a room that makes your brain happy!

You don’t need to be an interior designer or home remodeler to create a room that will make your brain happy. With the right layout, organization, and design, you can turn any space into a place of inspiration and creativity. But if you want to work with Jordan Morrissey Interior Design, here is how we design and craft rooms that make your brain (and your home) happy.

Color Scheme

The right color scheme can make all the difference in how your brain functions in a particular space. For example, bright and energetic colors like yellow, green, and blue are thought to stimulate creativity and help with focus. On the other hand, dark colors like black or grey can be calming and provide a sense of peace. Finding the right balance between these two extremes is important to feel comfortable and inspired in your new space.

If you're looking for the right color in your kitchen, you might try something that's calming, such as a green, blue, or beige tone. We love to use these hues as the cabinet color, giving the room a focal point and a peaceful feeling.

For a bedroom or common living space, we might take a similar approach. The goal for these spaces is to create uniformity and tranquility while still expressing a homeowner's unique style and taste. But we've found that most people want to feel like they're sitting in a soothing, safe space, and it all starts with the colors we use.

Furniture Layout

Your furniture layout plays an important role in how well you will feel in a particular room. A cluttered layout can lead to feelings of stress and overwhelm, while an organized one can foster peace and productivity. If you don't love the way a room makes you feel or if it’s awkward to move around in the space, try rearranging furniture pieces until you find the perfect flow for the room.

Furniture arrangements can be challenging, and finding the best configuration can feel just as overwhelming as picking out the right furniture, to begin with. We suggest you start with a main focal point, whether that's the fireplace, an entertainment center, or even a large coffee table you love. Use this as your inspiration for laying out a room that flows. Once you have this figured out, add or remove any pieces of furniture that don't align or make the room feel cluttered. Just remember to consider natural light sources and traffic patterns when deciding where to place each piece of furniture.

Remember: A cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind. And our entire goal here is to create a room that makes your brain happy!

Lighting Fixtures

Lighting fixtures also have an impact on how your brain functions within a certain space. Of course, natural light is always best, but if that isn’t an option, look for lighting fixtures that mimic natural light, such as LED bulbs or warm-toned lamps. These fixtures will help create a more inviting atmosphere which is key for a happy brain.

Natural light is one of the best stimulators of serotonin - A happiness hormone. There's no denying that sunshine instantly boosts your mood and improves your motivation to complete tasks. This is especially important in home offices and those working from home. Having an office space flooded with natural light is one of the best ways to remain focused, happy, and motivated to get your work done.

In other areas of the home, like the kitchen, bedrooms, or even basements, a ton of natural lighting is not always possible. That's why we recommend using softer lighting, both in overhead fixtures and lamps.

A dimmer switch is one of our favorite additions to these rooms. A dimmer gives homeowners ultimate control over the lighting in the room and can even set the tone for how a room feels after dark. If "homey" is your goal, then you should certainly consider adding dimmer switches.
