What to Consider When Choosing a Kitchen Sink

When choosing a kitchen sink, there are a few factors you will want to keep in mind. The first consideration is the size of the sink. It's important to choose a size that will be comfortable for you to use. If you have a large family, you may need a larger sink than someone who lives alone. Additionally, you'll want a new kitchen sink proportional to your new kitchen island or counter space. Matching a small sink with a large space won't look right, and putting a large kitchen sink in a small space won't leave you with much counter space. These are all things we consider during the initial design stages of a kitchen remodel.

The second factor to consider is the material of the sink. Again, there are a variety of materials to choose from, including stainless steel, porcelain, cast iron, and copper. Each material has its benefits and drawbacks. For example, stainless steel sinks are durable and easy to clean, while copper sinks are beautiful but can be expensive.

Lastly, you should consider the shape of the sink. There are a variety of shapes to choose from, including square, rectangular, and oval. The shape of the sink should match the style of your kitchen as well as your lifestyle.

The Different Types of Kitchen Sinks Available

When choosing a new kitchen sink for your home, it can be overwhelming to decide on the right one. That's why we're here to help!

Sink Materials

Stainless steel sinks are one of the most popular types of kitchen sinks. They are durable and easy to clean, making them a great choice for busy families. Stainless steel sinks come in various styles, including traditional and contemporary.

If you're looking for a unique sink that will really stand out in your kitchen (and have a budget to play with), you may want to consider a copper sink. These sinks are handmade from pure copper, and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. But, unfortunately, they are also costly, so be prepared to spend a little extra if you choose this type of sink.

Porcelain sinks are another popular choice for kitchen sinks. They are durable and easy to clean, and they come in a wide variety of colors. In addition, porcelain sinks are often less expensive than stainless steel or copper sinks, making them an excellent option for budget-minded homeowners.

Cast iron sinks are another option to consider when choosing a new kitchen sink. These sinks are heavy but very durable, and they come in a variety of styles, including traditional and contemporary. Cast iron sinks are often more expensive than other types of sinks, but they can last for decades with proper care.

Sink Mounting Styles

Once you've decided on a sink material, you'll need to decide on the style of the sink itself. Kitchen sinks can be mounted in a variety of ways. Some of the most popular mounting styles include:

Top-Mount Sinks

These sinks are the most common type of sink you'll find in dated kitchens and are usually seen with laminate countertops. We also see them a lot in apartments. This drop-in style sink mounts in from the top of the counter with a portion of the sink's rim clinging to the counter. These sinks are durable, affordable, and easy to maintain.

Under-Mount Sinks

As the name would suggest, these sinks mount to the counter from underneath. These sinks are the most popular choice these days, especially for homes with granite, quartz, and quartzite counters. Plus, homeowners love that they can sweep water and debris right into the sink since the rim doesn't exist on top of the counter.

Double Basin Sinks

Dual basins allow you the ultimate flexibility in cooking and cleaning. For example, one basin can be used for dirty dishes while the other remains open and free - a feature you don't get with one large basin. Additionally, double basin sinks can be as shallow or as deep as you'd like, and the double-basin sinks with a lower divider are usually what we recommend for our clients.

Farmhouse Sinks

Farm sinks are large, single-basin sinks with a unique look: They have a front wall that doubles as both the front of the counter and the front of the sink. These kitchen sinks come in all sizes and materials, making them a great option for homeowners looking for something unique in their new kitchen. However, they tend to come with a higher price tag, so be prepared for this in your budget if you really want a farmhouse sink.

Integrated Sinks

Integrated kitchen sinks are perhaps one of our favorite and most unique choices for kitchens. These units are part of the solid-surface kitchen countertop. Essentially, the sink is made of the same material as the countertop and fused to the counter. You've likely seen them in bathrooms, but their popularity in kitchens is growing.
