Flocked Christmas Trees & Why We Love Them!
The holidays are truly the most magical time of the year! People are hanging up their decorations everywhere we look, stringing lights in the trees, and looking for the PERFECT Christmas tree. But, if the ornaments and twinkling light aren’t enough for you this year, you’re not alone!
Part of the Christmas magic and spirit is the look and feel of freshly fallen snow and how it gracefully covers the evergreens. But, if you don’t want to go chop down your tree and bring all that fresh snow into the house, then an artificially flocked Christmas tree is just what you need!
What is a Flocked Tree?
Technically speaking, to flock something means to texturize the material by adding tiny fibers to it. When it comes to Christmas trees, flocking means adding white fibers to the fake pine needles and branches - giving the tree that magical, freshly fallen snow-covered look. We absolutely love flocked trees because the white powdered fibers give them more dimension and make the tree look more authentic. And, just think - you don’t have to bring in any of that cold snow!
Why We Love Flocked Trees
Besides bringing us back to our childhood, flocked trees also offer a more natural, non-traditional look. These trees also make a gorgeous statement in your living room and go perfectly with any décor. They also make your lights and ornaments pop, giving your guests a beautiful arrangement to admire during your Christmas parties. Plus, there’s something so festive and magical about seeing all of the gifts under the tree on Christmas morning.
Flock Your Own Tree
If you don’t currently have a flocked tree and don’t want to spend the money on a new one, there is a way to DIY this project.
The flocking powder can be found at nearly every craft of convenience store or on Amazon, but you can also make your own from scratch. Most store-bought powders just require some water and a quick stir, but if you’re an extreme DIYer, then here’s how you can make your own flocking spray.
You will need:
2 cups of white soap savings
⅔ cups of liquid cornstarch or white glue
4 tablespoons of warm water
Glitter (for fun)
Once you’ve mixed all your ingredients, set your tree up outside or in the garage. This way, the spray won’t get all of your living room, giving the flocking mixture ample time to dry.
Remember: This spray is sticky, so it’s always best to lay down a tarp and wear light clothing.
Flocking Tips…
Flock your tree before you hang any lights, tinsel, or ornaments.
Leave yourself two or three days for this project, and let the flock dry for at least 24 to 48 hours.
Avoid brushing the inside branches with flocking powder and only focus on the tips.
Allow some of the mixture to fall on needles and branches below.
Store your flocked artificial tree upright and covered by a cotton cloth. If you have a real tree, you can either recycle or discard the tree with the flocking on it.
