Kitchen Island Design Trends of 2022

Interior design trends are constantly changing, and as an expert in the industry, Jordan Morrissey Interior Design keeps a pulse on it all. While most trends stick around for a few years, some go just as quickly as they came. One area of the home where we’re starting to see a major shift is in the kitchen, primarily designs centered around kitchen islands.

These days, homeowners are spending more time in the kitchen, whether it be because they work from home or are simply preparing more delicious meals for the family. This shift has led to people really taking notice of how they utilize their kitchen space and where improvements can be made. While we do see many structural and functional changes, we also see a lot of aesthetic changes. So, let’s look at some of the top five kitchen island trends for 2022.

Trend #1: Colorful Cabinet Bases

Bold, colorful cabinetry has been on trend for several years now, but not everyone jumped on board. Still, it seems like everywhere you look, people are mixing and matching colors in the kitchen, and the island is no exception. With this colorful trend, we expect to see more and more homeowners mixing up the look of their kitchen just by adding a touch of color to the base of the island. It is a bold move to paint your island a different color, and we’re here for it! There are no rules, so if you search Pinterest for inspiration, we guarantee you’ll find kitchen islands of all colors.

Trend #2: Double Island Designs

If you’re a homeowner who loves to cook but loves to entertain even more, a double island kitchen design is the perfect solution. The kitchen island is versatile, meaning it’s often used as a place for food prep, dining, and even a place to get school work done. With this in mind, we’re noticing more and more kitchen designs that feature double islands. Some designs feature islands next to each other, while others showcase one island behind the other. Either way, this trend means more space in the kitchen for everyone in the home, no matter what they may need the space for.

Trend #3: Multi-Functional Ends

Kitchen islands don’t necessarily have to be one large block of wood and marble. If the kitchen you currently have is small and you need a place for the wine cooler, microwave, or even a kitchen table, making these a part of the kitchen island is a great way to save space without sacrificing functionality. The ends of the islands are often wasted spaces, but with this trend, we’re witnessing homeowners be creative and request different layouts than what’s traditionally considered a kitchen island.

Trend #4: Sinks in the Island

The kitchen sink has traditionally been put along the back wall of the kitchen. It sometimes overlooked the backyard so moms could watch their kids play outside. While these kitchen designs are still highly requested, more homeowners ask that the sink be a part of the island. When we make this change, it opens up so much more counter and storage space along the back of the kitchen. This trend also means mom (or dad) doesn’t have to have his back to the living room or rest of the home to do dishes or meal prep.

Trend #5: Drawers, Drawers, and More Drawers

The kitchen island storage is also on-trend to transform and change this year. In the past, islands have included traditional cabinets and shelves in the base. Now, we realize how much space we’ve wasted over the years! So, we’re fixing that problem by incorporating multi-layered drawer units instead. Drawers offer so much more storage and function than one shelf of cabinets ever could. For example, one drawer could be designated for the trashcan, keeping it up off the floor and out of sight. Another drawer could be used for all your pots and pans, clearing the area from underneath the stove. The possibilities with drawers are endless and are the perfect way to spruce up your kitchen design.
