How to Start Planning for a Kitchen Remodel

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Kitchens are the heart of any home. It’s where everyone gathers and it’s where hosts love to spend their time. If you think about it, the kitchen is where most of the family memories are made when everyone is around.

So, you can imagine that remodeling this space takes time, effort, and careful thought. If your current kitchen has seen better days, and you’re ready to see what Jordan Morrissey Interior Design can do for you, then let’s take a look at how you can start planning for a kitchen remodel.

Deer Run Kitchen features a long, custom-made wood island. The entire kitchen features white countertops and white cabinets for a clean and timeless look.

Know Your Budget

By the time you contact us, you’ve probably already been in the pre-planning phases for a better part of a year. In fact, Houzz Contributor Rebekah Zaveloff says that many homeowners find themselves in the exploration phase for a better part of a year - And we’d have to agree! But this timeline isn’t just about creating a vision board; It’s also about setting your budget. When it comes to a large remodeling project, it’s vital you have your budget set and know how much you can or want to spend. Once you have your base number, it’s a good rule of thumb to add 20-30% more for unplanned bumps in the road.

Do Your Initial Research

When you hire us, we’ll take a lot of the guesswork out of things for you. But that doesn’t mean we discourage you from visiting home shows and model floor plans to get a better idea of what you want. In fact, it’s much better for us when you have a clear-cut idea of what you want by the time we set up our proposal and sketches for your new kitchen. Additionally, part of your research should include layouts and thinking about how you can or want to use the space. If you have an idea of how you want your kitchen to look, then relaying those details to us is that much easier!

Assess Wants from Needs

The purpose of remodeling the kitchen is to give you a dream kitchen, isn’t it?! Yes! But there’s more to it. Your kitchen also needs to be functional and make sense for your lifestyle. So, when you start planning a kitchen remodel, you really need to separate the wants from the needs. Does it make sense to have a hidden pantry or do you need one that’s easily accessible? Do you have room for two ovens or will a single unit still make delicious meals every night? Should you go with quartz countertops or marble? While some things are absolute needs, others might just be wants. It’s up to you to decide what’s in your budget and what will fit the needs of your family.

Prepare Your Family

Any remodeling project happening in the home can disrupt the flow of your everyday life. That’s why we do our absolute best to give you a timeline and stick to it. We also do our best to mitigate any hassle. However, unforeseen circumstances always arise, and you may find yourself without a working kitchen for longer than anticipated. That’s why we always encourage homeowners to prepare their families for these hiccups. Whether this means preparing easy-to-reheat meals in bulk ahead of time or planning activities outside of the home during construction hours. You should also prepare for a lot of dust and debris in this area of your home–All things to be expected when going through a remodel.
